OSHA-10 in Texas: What It Is and Why It Matters
By Candra Brown · November 4, 2023
OSHA-10 is the cheapest, fastest credential in construction. It costs almost nothing, takes a weekend or a few evenings, and opens almost every job site in Houston. If you are getting into the trades or even just visiting active sites as a developer, agent, or investor, get it first.
What OSHA-10 Actually Is
OSHA-10 is a 10-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration training program for construction workers. It is offered through OSHA-authorized trainers in person or online. On completion, you receive a wallet card that does not expire, but many employers and project owners require renewal every three to five years to stay current.
What It Covers
- Introduction to OSHA, worker rights, and employer responsibilities
- Fall protection (the largest category of construction fatalities)
- Electrical safety
- Struck-by hazards
- Caught-in or between hazards
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Health hazards including silica, lead, and noise
- Materials handling, scaffolding, and ladder safety
Where to Take It in Houston
Online options are the fastest. Look for OSHA-authorized providers. Most charge between $50 and $90 for the 10-hour course. In-person options are offered through the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council, ABC Greater Houston, Construction Career Collaborative members, and community college continuing education programs.
Make sure the provider is OSHA-authorized. The wallet card has to come from the OSHA Outreach Training Program or it does not count.
What Employers Expect
Most reputable Houston commercial general contractors require OSHA-10 for anyone stepping on the job site. Many residential builders require it as well. C3 (Construction Career Collaborative) member contractors require it as a condition of working on their projects. If you do not have it, you will get turned away at the gate.
Why Non-Tradespeople Should Have It
Real estate agents who walk new construction sites benefit from it. Investors touring rehabs benefit from it. Developers managing subs benefit from it. The training gives you a working vocabulary for what you are looking at on a job site, and it makes you a safer presence to the crews already there.
What Comes After
OSHA-30 is the next step up. It is required for supervisors and foremen on many job sites. If you are planning to lead crews or manage a job, OSHA-30 is the credential to plan for after a year or two of field experience.
